Abstract

Introduction: Childhood maltreatment is a precursor to many negative developmental changes in a child’s life, like mental illnesses, anxious/avoidant attachment styles, and behavioral issues. This study investigates if the severity of childhood maltreatment might lead to a higher severity of elicited dissociation and if the early maladaptive schema of emotional deprivation mediates this association. Methods: The participants were n = 255 first-year psychology students aged between 17 and 36. The participants took part in a lab session that included two questionnaire batteries with an eye-gazing session between them to elicit dissociation through interpersonal contact by staring into a stranger's eyes. Mediation analysis with Process Model 4 was used for statistical analysis. Results: Childhood maltreatment severity was positively associated with elicited dissociation severity (R2 = .052) and emotional deprivation (R2 = .221). Emotional deprivation did not significantly mediate the relationship between childhood maltreatment severity and elicited dissociation severity. Emotional deprivation was not significantly associated with the severity of elicited dissociation (R2 = .063). Discussion: Childhood maltreatment is a significant risk factor that can induce dissociation through various mechanisms. For instance, the absence of nurture and care may reinforce schemas of emotional deprivation, disruption of developmental processes, and fostering maladaptive coping strategies that lead to dissociation. To address this, future research should focus on interventions targeting interpersonal factors. Additionally, maltreated children should have access to interventions centered on enhancing relationships with caregivers. These interventions can help children overcome maladaptive core beliefs and weaken detrimental schemas, promoting healthier emotional development.
