Abstract

This study explored the influence of group size and task characteristics on students’ preferences for group work assessment methods and students’ perceptions of fairness. Using a mixed methods approach data were collected through an online survey. The study analysed responses to vignettes representing group work assignments with different task characteristics and group sizes to discern different patterns in students’ group assessment preferences and their perceptions of fairness. Key findings indicate that in the majority of the vignettes students favour assessment methods that assess both individual contributions and the group product. However, group grade preferences were observed in the scenario combining a well-structured task with a small group. Individual grading were least favoured regardless of vignette type. The vignette representing a well-structured task with a small group influenced most positively students’ perceptions of fairness, especially when combined with a preference for the ‘Group Grade with Peer Assessment’ method.
