Abstract

Previous studies state that the soft skills gap – the discrepancy between the soft skills needed in the workplace and the soft skills possessed by the workforce – is widening. This research focuses on the development of soft skills – the interpersonal qualities one possesses – and how workplace supervisors are currently stimulating this development in their students. This analysis includes the relationship between the supervisor and the student. A qualitative research design has been applied. Workplace supervisors in secondary vocational education recorded audio fragments, for a period of six weeks, in which they reflected on their own actions and the effects of these actions. The deductive codes consist of the 8 soft skills from the literature of Chytiri et al. (2020); communication, flexibility, interpersonal skills, positive attitude, professionalism, responsibility, teamwork and work ethic; and the relationship of trust from the literature of Kroeze (2014) and Moore (2023). The supervisor’s feeling is added as an inductive code. The data, consisting of 75 transcripts from 18 supervisors, show several techniques supervisors currently use to facilitate the development of the student’s soft skills. A major finding is that the entrustment between the supervisor and the student is conditional on facilitating the development of soft skills. This entrustment also shapes the affordances and agency of both actors. The findings may help workplace supervisors gain more insight in the importance building trust between themselves and the student. Finally, limitations, implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.
