Abstract

Social-emotional skills are increasingly important for success on the labour market, academic achievement and well-being. Contrarily, a lack of social-emotional skills is associated with aggressive, internalizing and externalizing behaviour, as well as problems with adjusting to school environments. Music education has been shown to be a suitable setting for children to acquire social-emotional skills. The purpose of this study was therefore to collect and compare existing knowledge on the effects of music education on the development of socialemotional skills of children aged 0-18. To that end, a systematic literature review was conducted. Out of 1361 articles found in Web of Science and ERIC, 17 studies were selected for further analysis. The findings show positive effects on prosocial skills, social relations, self-confidence and emotional skills as well as contradictory effects on collaboration, communication, emotion recognition, and empathy and sympathy. For example, children learn to collaborate in choral or orchestral settings, but not in other music education settings. One possible explanation is that performing as part of a choir or orchestra makes children dependent on each other for their personal success and thus requires them to learn to collaborate efficiently. Due to the largely positive effects of music education on the development of social-emotional skills of children, investments should be made in music education for teachers. Keywords: social-emotional skills, music education, development, children, adolescents
