Abstract

Active Learning Classrooms (ALC’s) are an approach to classroom design, used to promote active forms of learning and improve student engagement. This study investigated the expectations, experiences and obstacles of teachers using ALC’s at the University of Groningen. Through a qualitative content analysis of an open-ended questionnaire the preparations, implementations, and problems of teachers were analyzed. The facilities were categorized within three main ‘themes’: high-tech facilities, low-tech facilities, and flexible furniture. Results show that teachers in ALC’s frequently plan to use high-tech facilities in their classrooms. However, many of these plans were hindered to some extent by technological defects and organizational issues. Flexible furniture was mainly used during student-centered activities and earned a dominantly positive response in the questionnaire. The main obstacle concerned the time and effort required to facilitate classroom setups. Low-tech facilities were mentioned the least and were mainly used alongside flexible furniture and the student/group-centered activities, with lack of materials as most significant constraint. The study concludes that teachers’ expectations during preparations are not always met, especially concerning high-tech facilities. Flexible furniture and low-tech facilities meet expectations more often, but also have logistical challenges. To address this gap between expectation and reality, it is advised that the University of Groningen offers more training for the teachers, improves the quality of their facilities, and provides more technological support. These findings highlight that ALC’s are still a relatively new concept in development. Insights from this study can help improve the use and effectiveness of ALC’s and their facilities.
