Abstract

Bad news (BN) in workplace settings influences how employees see themselves and others around them. Appraisal theory explains that when faced with stressful situations like BN the individual will view others differently. This identity threat (IDT) can affect productivity and workplace commitment, such as causing increased rates of absenteeism and reduced workplace commitment. This article explored the relation between BN valence (denied promotion or being laid off) and IDT. It also explored the moderating effect of self-esteem (SE)on the relation between bad news conditions (BNC) and IDT, assuming employees with higher SE feel less IDT following BN. It focuses on the primary appraisal of IDT after receiving BN, as we are interested in the immediate effects of BNC on IDT. Participants (n=145) completed a vignette exploring four possible outcomes of performance and BNC and were then instructed to complete a questionnaire measuring IDT. This relation was explored using both one-way ANOVA and ANCOVA. It found that there were no significant results between BNC and IDT, meaning that the valence of BN does not influence IDT. Furthermore, it found no significant results for SE as a moderating factor between BNC and IDT. This leads to the conclusion BN valence does not influence IDT, and SE does not play a role in lessening the effect on IDT. Future studies should explore the moderating factor of SE on secondary appraisal. Keywords: Appraisal theory; Identity threat; Denied promotions; Lay-off; Self-esteem
