Abstract

Life satisfaction is a cognitive evaluation of life that serves as an indicator for academic and interpersonal success, good health, longevity, reduced daily stress, and financial well-being. Having (non-)biological children in the household impacts life satisfaction, influenced by measurement tools, studied population, and the age of participants. The influence’s strength is related to factors such as gender, relationship status, and the number of children. This research utilizes secondary data from the British Cohort Study, focusing on 34-year-olds. The research question is: ‘To what extent does life satisfaction differ between 34-year-olds with (non-)biological children living at home and those without children?’ Regression analyses are conducted using two Likert Scale questions and three questions with two statements each. Gender is further explored through a moderator analysis. Gender, relationship status and number of children have been included as control variables. The study finds an association between having (non-)biological children living in a household and a higher life satisfaction, with negligible differences between men and women with and without (non-)biological children. Legally separated or divorced individuals exhibit lower life satisfaction than those never married or married once. Having more children is associated with lower life satisfaction. To enhance future research, it is recommended to use multiple measurement points for life satisfaction and include additional variables such as financial status and work arrangements. A broader investigation could help to understand the interrelationships and causality of more variables such as the link between relationship status and the number of children living in a household.
