Abstract
Young people with a foster care background generally have less favorable educational outcomes than their peers without this background. When they begin higher education, they often face various challenges across different life domains, and solutions focused on a single aspect are often insufficient. The aim of this systematic literature review was to identify hindering factors and effective retention strategies for youth with a foster care background in higher education. Employing Réndon’s (2006) Student Success Model, special attention was paid to the role of educational institutions in supporting these young people. Literature was sourced through the databases ERIC and PsychInfo, resulting in the inclusion of 19 studies. It can be concluded that challenges and solutions in higher education extend beyond the individual student and that retention strategies can make an actual impact for students with a foster care background. However, existing literature remains largely in an exploratory stage, highlighting the need for more research attention on the role of education institutions in supporting this student population.
