Abstract
The purpose of this systematic literature review was to synthesize the scientific knowledge on storybook reading to children with hearing loss, aged 0 to 6. The study addressed two research questions. For the first research question, the influence of storybook reading on the language development is explored. Twelve articles were included. The included studies had experimental, correlational and single-subject designs. Some form of coherence has been found in all included studies. It can cautiously be concluded that there is a positive relation between storybook reading and the language development of deaf and hard of hearing children. Further research is necessary to provide insight into causality. For the second research question, exploring the accessibility of storybook reading to children with hearing loss, no relevant literature was found. For further research, an interview study is suggested. In conclusion, storybook reading to deaf and hard of hearing children can increase language exposure and there seems to be a positive connection to language development.
