Abstract

Parents with depression may be emotionally inflexible. To examine how this relates to the emotion dynamics in interactions with their young children, this study investigated to what extent parental depressive symptoms are associated with the emotional flexibility of the parent-child dyad and the emotion expression of the child. The study used data from TRAILS NEXT, from a sample of Dutch parents and their 2.5-year-old children (n = 40). Parental depressive symptoms were assessed with the DSM IV Depressive Problems scale from the Adult Self Report. Videos of parents and children building block towers and cleaning up toys were coded according to the Specific Affect coding system. Based on the coded emotions, two measures of dyadic emotional flexibility were calculated: the number of transitions between emotions and dispersion. The emotional expression of the child was measured as the seconds per minute the child was coded neutral. Simple linear regression analyses revealed that parental depressive symptoms were not related to dyadic emotional flexibility nor to emotion expression of the child. As there was little variance in parental depressive symptoms in the sample, further research is needed to draw conclusions on the relationship between parental depression and the emotions in parent-child interactions.
