Abstract
The perspective of healthcare professionals on implementing assistance dogs is under-researched, despite their crucial role in this area. This study aims to provide insights into healthcare professionals' experiences with psychosocial assistance dogs for youth with mental health problems. The research question was: What are healthcare professionals' experiences regarding the implementation of psychosocial assistance dogs for clients with mental health problems? Semi- structured interviews were conducted with eight healthcare professionals. The data underwent coding utilizing the constant comparison method, along with open, axial, and selective coding techniques. The results revealed several themes: 'Healthcare Professional Engagement', 'Impact of Assistance Dogs', and 'Nature of Assistance Dog Issues'. 'Healthcare Professional Engagement' included subcategories such as involvement in the application process and degree of involvement. 'Impact of Assistance Dogs' covered subcategories like progress, setbacks, and challenges. 'Nature of Assistance Dog Issues' yielded subcategories such as recommending an assistance dog, considerations for recommendation, discouraging an assistance dog, and associated considerations. The study recommends acknowledging the complexity of this topic and conducting further research to better understand the role and effectiveness of assistance dogs in mental healthcare. Future research should focus on how targeted training and education programs for healthcare professionals can enhance their understanding of assistance dogs, investigate the long- term effects of psychosocial assistance dogs on clients' well-being, compare assistance dogs with other therapies, and utilize data triangulation. By improving understanding, healthcare delivery can be enhanced, ultimately reducing mental health problems among youth.
