Abstract

Appreciation at work is a growing topic in the literature. However, this concept has so far only been studied within the workplace (e.g., as appreciation by supervisors, colleagues, and customers). I used the concept of work meaningfulness to define another dimension of appreciation, namely appreciation by oneself. Moreover, I extended the conceptualization of work appreciation by adding the dimension of appreciation by society which has not yet been done in research. Secondly, I explored the relationship between the suggested dimensions of appreciation and social trust. So far, no research has explored the relationship of work appreciation with aspects beyond the workplace. A cross-section self-report study (N = 223) was conducted to test the hypotheses. Results of the exploratory factor analysis indicate that the four proposed dimensions of work appreciation seem to be separate constructs, indicating the multidimensional nature of appreciation. Furthermore, the results of the exploratory analysis indicate that the combined dimension of work appreciation by supervisors and colleagues was related to social trust. This indicates that how one gets treated at work but also how one treats others at work not only has organizational-related consequences but also more far-reaching consequences for society. Keywords: appreciation, work appreciation, social trust, work meaningfulness
