Abstract
Assessing performance is a crucial procedure to measure progress and make decisions in a variety of domains (Kuncel et al., 2013). Examples highlighting the use of performance assessment range from schools determining an individual’s success in a course, to job selection procedures (Johnson et al., 2008). This study focused on music performance assessment. Generally, individuals pursuing a musical career are assessed through musical performances that are judged by experts (i.e., music assessors) in the field (e.g., jazz or classical music). But what do these experts actually see and hear when they judge a musician as talented? This is a crucial question, and interestingly, even the experts themselves find it difficult to answer the question. The current study sought to comprehend the process used by these experts to make judgments about students’ music performances. Although the results are not conclusive, they provide insight into how assessors make assessments at this particular institution. This information can provide a first step into identifying aspects of music assessment that can be improved, and in the development of assessment tools that reflect the most important pieces of information when assessing a performance.
