Abstract

This research aimed to measure the perceived purpose of education among students and educators and drew comparisons between students and educators and among students grouped on their self-efficacy level and grade point average. The sample consisted mainly of students and staff from the Psychology department at the University of Groningen. To measure this it used a survey containing sections measuring general demographics, grade point average, self-efficacy and a self-designed survey that measured the perceived purpose of the content of education, the role of educators in higher education and the role of universities in higher education. The analysis of the results presented significant differences between students and educators, and between students grouped on their self-efficacy level and grade point average. The main findings for students and educators in general were on the perceived status of equality and support for students, and on the practical aspect of higher education and preparation for the workforce. The main findings for students grouped by grade point average and self-efficacy were on their desire for having educators act as authority figures. The study proposed an introspective study into the internal state of universities addressing the perceived inequality and lack of support for students by students and educators, additional measures to provide structure to students with low grades and/or low self-efficacy, and the use of internships to prepare students better for their life after graduation.
