Abstract

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (1926-2004) is to this day largely famous for the stages of grief. A model that she did not conceptualise but became associated with over time. Her own body of work was overwritten by a literal understanding of the chapter headers she used in her first book. These were called denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance and used to describe the range of emotions of terminally ill patients who are facing their death. Using newspaper articles of her time and Kübler-Ross's own descriptions, this thesis aims to understand how the meaning of the chapter headers changed in the public media to a literal, linear understanding that turned into the famous stages of grief and how Kübler-Ross came to accept that.
