Abstract
The track recommendation process in the Netherlands plays an important role in determining students’ academic trajectories. Concerns have been raised about potential biases in this process, particularly regarding the influence of students' ethnic-cultural backgrounds on their track recommendations. The objective of this study is to understand how young adults perceive this influence and to explore potential differences in these experiences. A qualitative study was conducted, using semi-structured interviews (n=48). The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three themes were identified: (1) The experience that ethnic-cultural background did not influence the recommendation, (2) The experience that ethnic-cultural background may have influenced the recommendation, and (3) Difficulty in determining whether there is a link between ethnic-cultural background and the recommendation. Most respondents (n=38) did not perceive their ethnic-cultural background as a significant factor in their track recommendation, emphasizing the importance of objective criteria instead. However, some respondents highlighted that language barriers and parental involvement associated with their ethnic-cultural background did impact their track recommendations. Based on these findings, it is recommended that schools and policymakers become more aware of the potential influence of ethnic-cultural background on track recommendations. There is a need for additional support for students with language barriers and for better engagement of parents in educational processes to ensure equal opportunities for all students. Future research could focus on a larger, more diverse sample to further validate these findings and explore the role of different types of education, such as international schools and special education, in the track recommendation process.
