Abstract

Previous studies have suggested that self-directed disgust negatively impacts sexual functioning and mental health. Brouwer et al. (2023) examined whether sexual scenarios elicited three types of self-disgust (pathogen, sexual, and moral) and mental contamination in women as measured by self-report assessments. The results of this study showed that the sexual scenarios significantly elicited all three types of self-directed disgust and mental contamination, with participants showing a moderate to poor ability to imagine and relate to the scenarios.
