Abstract

Humour has been used as a coping mechanism within activism for a long time. Research shows that humour is effective in decreasing anxiety, depression and tension. In our current study we research if these results hold up for activists. We conducted qualitative research (N = 8) by interviewing left-winged activists in Germany which we interpreted by thematic analysis. Results of the study show that humour is indeed an effective coping mechanism. It is widely used by left-winged activists, from signs to ludic and jokes. There are times when humour is not appropriate, for example when someone got hurt or if it takes attention away from the cause they are fighting for. If used appropriately, it decreases tension, stress, anxiety, helplessness and even the feeling of responsibility. Humour takes some of the seriousness away as well which makes it lighter. All of these effects of humour make it possible for activists to keep being active in collective action.
