Abstract
This qualitative study explored the experiences of Black Germans in psychotherapy and the influence of anti-Black racism (ABR) on these experiences through semi-structured online interviews with eight participants. An interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed five themes: ‘Attitudes and structural challenges’, ‘Addressing ABR’, ‘Experiencing racialization’, ‘Parallel experiences in addressing ABR and experiencing racialization’, and ‘Wishes and needs’. Participants generally viewed psychotherapy positively but faced structural barriers. Most participants did not view psychotherapy as a safe environment to address ABR due to psychotherapists' negative reactions, racialization, discomfort, and lack of racial literacy, leading some participants to discontinue psychotherapy. Contrary, participants who viewed psychotherapy as a safe environment to discuss ABR attributed this to their psychotherapists’ empathy and racism-related responsiveness. Most preferred psychotherapists with personal racism experiences or specialized knowledge. These results show ABR's influence on psychotherapy, highlighting the need to integrate ABR education, intersectionality, and racism-related responsiveness into psychotherapy training.
