Abstract

Response inhibition is associated with the motor performance and social functioning of both typically and atypically developing children. The current study investigated the relationships between response inhibition and motor skills, response inhibition and peer problems, and response inhibition and prosocial behavior in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). The current study has a cross-sectional research design, and data were collected using a neuropsychological test, the Test for Attentional Abilities for Children (TEA-Ch), a fitness test, the PERFormance and FITness (PERF-FIT) test battery, and a questionnaire for the child’s parents, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The sample consisted of 23 children aged 6 to 12 years, recruited from (special) primary schools and pediatric physical therapy practices in the Northern region of the Netherlands, with an almost equal distribution of gender and school type. All children were diagnosed with DCD or met the DSM-5 criteria for DCD. The results indicate that poor response inhibition in children with DCD is associated with worse motor performance (p = .036), and that good response inhibition in children with DCD is associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior (p = .036). Poor response inhibition in children with DCD is not associated with more peer problems (p > .05). The current study contributes to the sparse literature on the role of response inhibition in the motor performance and social functioning of children with DCD and provides important suggestions for further research.
