Abstract

This systematic literature review explores the relationship between potentially traumatic events in childhood, including adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the development of executive functions (EF) in children aged 12-18. Psychological trauma, such as different types of abuse, neglect and violence, is found to have a negative impact on processing capacities. Limited executive functions can manifest in cognitive, psychosocial, physical and emotional challenges and impacted academic performance. This review includes a total of 3795 participants across 11 studies from online databases, utilizing instruments such as the CTQ, BRIEF, TMT-B and WISC to examine the link between adverse childhood experiences and executive functions, cognitive flexibility, inhibition control and working memory. The findings suggest that different types of (severity) ACE and (clusters) PTSD can hinder the development of cognitive flexibility, inhibition and working memory, with different levels of impact depending on the severity of the traumatic experiences. Effect sizes are considered small to medium and therefore the findings should be reconsidered in future studies to determine the validity and reliability of the outcomes. Investigating the impact of clusters PTSD and types of ACE and on cognitive flexibility, inhibition control and working memory in future longitudinal studies could enhance more clarity in gradients of childhood trauma exposure and its impacts on executive functioning and learning outcomes. Keywords: psychological trauma, adverse childhood experiences, cognitive flexibility, inhibition control, working memory.
