Abstract
Performance validity testing (PVT) is increasingly utilized in neuropsychological evaluations to ensure credible performances. However, there is a gap of knowledge about how the paediatric population perform on adult based PVT. This current study aims to assess whether the baseline performance of 110 children and adolescents on PVTs, namely the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM), the Reliable Digit Span (RDS), and the Groningen Effort Test (GET), are comparable to adult performances. In addition, an intercultural perspective is explored by determining whether PVTs can be utilized in African cultures with the same cut-off score as in Europe. The findings reveal that children and adolescents perform poorly based on adult cut-off scores for the various PVTs. Further findings in this study demonstrate a cultural difference in test performances, with the African group performing better than the European group on the PVTs. There is an overall emphasis on the need to adapt cut-off scores to accommodate for age and cultural differences. Keywords: malingering, performance validity testing, test of memory malingering, wechsler intelligence scale for children, digit span, reliable digit span, groningen effort test, children and adolescents, culture
