Abstract

Episodic memory is often said to be influenced by emotion. Negative emotion has been utilised to test the effect of emotion on memory, however, there is a lack of research on the influence of positive emotion on memory. We propose that positive emotion has an enhancing effect of episodic memory, specifically associative memory, and memory for objects. We created a paradigm to induce positive emotion in memory engrams for participants (N = 95) using imagination to create engrams. We used cued association testing to check memory accuracy in positive and neutral emotion conditions. We also explored possible relation of traits like extraversion, emotional reactivity, depression, and vividness of imagined visual imagery to induced emotion. Results indicated nonsignificant signs of adjusted emotion due to manipulation, no visible effects of emotion on memory, and a lack of correlation with exploratory measures. Theoretical and practical implications of results, along with limitations and ideation for further research is discussed.
