Abstract
Purpose in life has consistently been associated with positive outcomes for achievement and well-being. However, how purpose exerts its impact is largely unknown. In this thesis, I tested and explored the mediating role of academic self-efficacy in the relationship between purpose in life and intellectual risk-taking. To that end, two studies were conducted that investigated the proposed mediation pathway quantitatively using a cross-sectional survey design, and qualitatively using narrative analysis of semi-structured interviews. Quantitative results supported the suggested mediation, indicating that purpose in life imbues students with the academic self-efficacy to engage in intellectual risk-taking. The qualitative analysis suggested that, in addition to sources of self-efficacy, the prospective nature of purpose leads students to expend considerable effort towards their purpose-related goals and persist throughout the challenges associated with risk-taking, if they are committed to a clear purpose in life. This research expanded on previous research and yielded implications for the measurement of purpose, future research, and the benefits of cultivating purpose in life in the student context.
