Abstract

This research explores the perceptions of society regarding Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in relation to masculinity norms. In addition, the differences in these perceptions between age groups were examined. Societal perceptions were collected through an online questionnaire on IPV and masculinities, completed by a sample of 316 (Mage = 42.1, SDage = 13.0) adult women from the United Kingdom. Participants were divided into three experimental conditions using a between-subjects design, containing either traits of different masculinity types or no traits. The findings indicate that the likelihood of a man perpetrating IPV is perceived to be higher in case of traditional masculinity traits compared to new masculinity traits. The differences in these perceptions across age groups were not significant. This knowledge contributes to a better understanding of the underlying processes of IPV and masculinity norms, with the primary goal of reducing the occurrence of IPV. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are thoroughly discussed.
