Abstract
Emotion and episodic memory have been shown to interact with each other in complex ways. Previous research has focused on effects of arousal and negative emotion, this study researched the effects of positive emotion. An experiment was carried out employing a within-subject design (N = 95). Participants completed imagination tasks encoding different engrams consisting of four elements. To manipulate emotion, one of these elements was randomly generated to serve as a positive or neutral stimulus. After encoding, participants completed an object recognition- and an associative memory test. Results yielded insignificant results, suggesting that positive emotion does not influence episodic memory. The manipulation of emotion was unsuccessful, indicating that these results are not conclusive. Future studies should focus more on the relationship between positive emotion and episodic memory and explore underlying biological mechanisms.
