Abstract
This study explores the dynamics of self-efficacy, performance, and their reciprocal relationship during a football season of elite youth football players. Understanding these dynamics can reveal novel insights for sustaining high performance and enhancing athletes’ development. Therefore, this study utilised a secondary dataset from the ‘Resilient Athletes’ research program, conducted over the course of two seasons. The dataset consisted of 51 elite youth academy football players, aged between 14-21 years old. Self-efficacy and performance were measured via the Resilience App before and after each training and match. Curve estimation analysis was performed to fit linear, quadratic, and cubic trends on the daily averages of self-efficacy and performance data. The reciprocal relationship was analysed with moving window correlations and curve estimation. Results showed that self-efficacy, performance and the relationship between performance and subsequent pre-event self efficacy fluctuated during a football season, with no specific pattern. The relationship between pre-training or match self-efficacy and performance showed an S-shaped cubic trend, where the relationship was positive in the beginning of the season and negative towards the end. Together, this study underscores the dynamic nature of self-efficacy and performance and provides suggestions for sport psychologists and coaches for timely and tailored interventions to boost performance and development.
