Abstract
Feedback is given in many different aspects of one's life, with one aspect where it can be considered useful is in terms of one's career. Research has been interested in how negative career feedback can lead to engagement in adaptive career development behaviors, such as career exploration. Career distress has also been investigated as a mediator between this relationship, although overall, results of this model are mixed. This suggests a possibility for individual differences between participants playing a part, such as one's mindset and therefore one's beliefs about the malleability of their abilities. The present study investigates the relationship between negative career feedback and career exploration, as well as career distress as a mediator in this relationship and growth mindset as a moderator between career distress and career exploration. There were 182 participants, made up of both students and employees who completed an online survey, responding about their demographics and on the variables of interest. All relationships, except for that between negative career feedback and career distress, were non-significant. The theoretical and practical implications of the results as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.
