Abstract
This study investigated the association between callous-unemotional (CU) traits and attachment styles, with a focus on the moderating role of anxiety. This paper used a sample of 66 first-year psychology students from the University of Groningen to investigate how attachment dimensions, attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance, influence the expression of CU traits. The findings showed that attachment avoidance is positively associated with CU traits, implying that individuals who maintain emotional distance and repress emotions are likelier to exhibit CU traits. However, attachment anxiety, which is defined by a strong desire for intimacy and reassurance, does not show an association with CU traits. General anxiety does not appear to influence the relationship between attachment dimensions and CU traits. This study emphasizes the importance of early identification and screening for high attachment avoidance, especially in adolescents exposed to adverse life events, to reduce the probability of expressing CU traits. Future research should explore additional factors influencing CU traits and consider longitudinal studies to understand these dynamics over time.
