Abstract
This study examines the societal perception of new masculinity traits within the context of fatherhood. Using a quantitative approach, female participants (N = 316, Mage = 42.1, SDage = 13.0) were given descriptions of men displaying traditional or new masculinity traits or no traits in regard to fatherhood. Results indicate that fathers who exhibit new masculinity traits are perceived as more likely to express emotional responsiveness, positive involvement and responsible paternal engagement in their children’s lives compared to those displaying traditional masculinity traits. The findings highlight a potential influence of societal norms on perceptions of masculinities and fatherhood. This suggests the importance of implementing policies and interventions promoting gender equality in parenting and paternal involvement in childcare. Despite its limitations, the study contributes to the understanding of evolving societal perceptions of masculinities and fatherhood within the discussion of gender equality and caring responsibilities in the family context. Keywords: new masculinities, societal norms, caring fatherhood, gender equality
