Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology that impacts various fields, including education. AI has a major impact on education by providing several benefits and as it continues to evolve, new and more effective applications in education are emerging. This study investigated AI integration at universities, focusing on its advantages, challenges, and ethical implications. It also explored the variations in AI usage across different disciplines at universities, and the factors that affect universities’ decisions during this integration process. The study adopted document analysis and documents from top ten universities in the Netherlands and Türkiye were analyzed, along with strategic action plans from both countries. Findings showed that most universities lack established AI integration guidelines. While AI offers several opportunities, it also introduces ethical issues and challenges. Enhancing teaching and learning emerged as a significant opportunity, but the main challenges include AI’s impact on assessment methods and the emerging nature of AI technology. To ensure responsible and effective use of AI in higher education, stakeholders—students, teachers, and policymakers—should increase their awareness and preparedness. Keywords: artificial intelligence (AI), higher education, AI integration, university
