Abstract

The present research examines the perceptions of variance in gender equality-supportive attitudes and behaviors between traditional and new masculine men, while also accounting for a control group. Perceived gender equality-supportive attitudes and behaviors were surveyed separately in an experimental study using a between-subjects design. The sample consisted of 316 heterosexual women from the United Kingdom (Age range: 20-78, Mage = 42, SDage=13). Results show that new masculine men are perceived to hold more attitudes supportive of gender equality than traditional masculine men (H1) and that new masculine men are perceived to engage in more behaviors supportive of gender equality than traditional masculine men (H2). Following previous research into gender equality-related interventions, the results imply new masculinity as favorable and more effective in a society that wants to move forward according to feminist ideals such as gender equality. Results add to the existing scientific research by examining perceptions rather than actual behaviors and by being at the front of research into new masculinity constructs. Various limitations regarding the sample and the questionnaire are discussed, along with suggestions for future research that include more diverse samples and rephrasing of certain constructs.
