Abstract

Compliance with test instructions during cognitive testing significantly impacts the reliability of test results. Despite evidence that children can exhibit noncredible performance during neuropsychological assessments, performance validity tests (PVTs) specifically designed and validated in pediatric populations are scarce. Thus, developing and validating PVTs to detect noncredible performance in children and adolescents is necessary. The Groninger Effort Test (GET) is an attention-based PVT designed to detect feigned adult ADHD. This study assesses the utility of the GET in detecting noncredible performance in children and adolescents. The GET was administered to 97 healthy school-aged children aged 8 to 17 years. A simulation design was employed by allocating participants to either a full effort group (n = 57) or a poor effort group (n = 34). Results showed significantly better performance of the full effort group compared to the poor effort group. Moreover, the GET index and GET error criterion were found to exhibit sufficient sensitivity (index = 77.3%; error = 59.1%) but in combination with low specificity (index = 50.9%; error = 54.4%). Lastly, no relationship between GET criteria and age was found. In light of the results of this study, it is premature to recommend the use of the GET for pediatric neuropsychological assessment. Future research should include clinical samples and comparisons with healthy participants to further investigate and validate the GET's clinical utility in pediatric neuropsychology.
