Abstract
Neuroticism is a risk factor for psychopathology and has been linked to various negative interpersonal outcomes. A lack of strong interpersonal relationships can lead to psychological distress, loneliness and mental disorders, especially depression and anxiety disorders. The aim of this study was to further examine the relationship between neuroticism and interpersonal contact. Two hypotheses were formulated: 1) people who score higher on neuroticism, spend less time in the company of others, 2) when they are in the company of others, they appraise their company less positive. These hypotheses were tested with data from 316 participants of the crowdsourcing project HowNutsAreTheDutch. Neuroticism was measured by a 48-item scale, which consisted of the neuroticism items of the NEO-FFI-3 and the NEO-PI-3. Ecological momentary assessment was used to measure quantity and perceived quality of social company. In this study participants received a link to an online questionnaire 3 times a day for 30 days. EMA is very suitable for measuring social functioning, because measuring occurs frequently and shortly after the experience, which leads to high reliability and high ecological validity. This study is one of the first to use EMA to research the relationship between neuroticism and interpersonal contact. Both hypotheses were confirmed, people who score higher on neuroticism did spend less time in the company of others and when they were in the company of others, they appraised their company less positive. Additional analyses showed that extraversion plays a bigger role on both measures of interpersonal contact than neuroticism does. These findings suggest that the relationship between neuroticism and interpersonal contact may depend on the level of extraversion. Future research on interpersonal relationships should use EMA and focus on taking both neuroticism and extraversion into account. Keywords: Interpersonal functioning, interpersonal relationships, neuroticism, extraversion, ecological momentary assessment
