Abstract

This study investigates the psychometric properties of a renewed version of Happé’s Cartoon Test, a tool designed to assess Theory of Mind (ToM) through humor comprehension. Existing literature highlights the importance of validated social cognitive tests in diagnosing and treating deficits in social cognition, which are often linked to neurological disorders. The primary research question addresses whether the renewed Cartoon test is reliable and valid. We hypothesized that the renewed Cartoon test would demonstrate adequate internal consistency, convergent validity with established social cognition measures, and discriminant validity from unrelated constructs. The study included 27 participants aged 21 to 72, who were assessed using the renewed Cartoon test, the Facial Expressions of Emotion: Stimuli and Tests (FEEST), the Trail Making Test Part B (TMT-B) and a ToM battery. Results indicated inadequate internal consistency for the renewed Cartoon test (Cronbach’s alpha = .030). Convergent validity was limited, with low, non-significant correlations between the renewed Cartoon test and both the FEEST and the old version of the Cartoon test. However, discriminant validity was supported by the absence of significant correlations with the Trail Making Test Part B. Additionally, no significant differences were found in the renewed Cartoon test performance across different educational levels. These findings suggest that while the renewed Cartoon test shows promise, it requires further refinement to improve reliability and validity. The study underscores the importance of developing robust social cognitive assessments, which are crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective intervention in clinical neuropsychology. Future research should involve larger and more diverse samples to enhance the generalizability and robustness of the test.
