Abstract
Meaning in life has been shown to be related to eating disorder symptoms, and recent research explores this relationship further. This study analyzed whether the three sub-constructs of meaning in life—comprehension, purpose, and mattering (George et al., 2016)—are individually related to eating disorder symptoms. Using an existing dataset, multiple linear regression and correlation analyses were conducted. Participants (n=478), recruited through Prolific, were 50.3% female with an average age of 28.71 years. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Psychology at the University of Groningen. Data were collected using the MEMS and the EDE-Q 6.0, both of which demonstrated internal consistency. Multiple regression tested the independent contributions of the three MiL sub-constructs to eating disorder symptoms, satisfying the assumptions of homoscedasticity and independence of residuals. Descriptive statistics revealed minimal gender differences in MiL sub-construct scores but noticeable differences in EDE-Q scores, with higher variability among women. Correlation analysis showed weak but expected negative correlations between MiL sub-constructs and EDE-Q scores, indicating higher MiL scores are associated with lower eating disorder symptoms. Multiple regression analysis indicated that only the comprehension sub-construct had a significant independent relationship with eating disorder symptoms for both genders, while purpose and mattering did not. These findings suggest the comprehension aspect of MiL may play a more critical role in mitigating eating disorder symptoms compared to purpose and mattering.
