Abstract

This thesis investigates burnout definitions to identify clinically useful aspects, and to understand what makes clinical definitions in general more effective in practice. Using burnout as an instrument, this thesis aims to bridge the gap between researchers who develop definitions and the clinical practitioners who use them. Through semi-structured interviews with psychologists, the study investigated the clinical utility of burnout definitions by means of recognizability, treatment applicability, and specificity. The results show that Manzano- García's holistic and explanatory model - which also combines stressors from the personal and professional spheres - is highly appreciated in terms of clinical utility. Due to its precise representation of severe suffering and burnout symptoms, Farber's "worn-out subtype" was widely accepted and may have greater clinical utility. This thesis concluded that to increase clinical utility for definitions in manuals, it is essential to emphasize integrative and explanatory models of disorders, instead of only focusing on the symptomatology of disorders. The field of mental health care may achieve a deeper understanding of disorders by adjusting these reductionist approaches to more holistic approaches.
