Abstract

Research on asexuality is characterized by the use of multiple different definitions of asexuality, most of which stem from researchers and, thus, their understanding of this identity. Given the lack of research examining asexuals’ experiences with research on asexuality, the current study aimed to explore asexuals’ opinions on the definitions of asexuality used in research on asexuality. Ten participants that identify as asexual or on the asexuality spectrum were interviewed two separate times. A reflexive thematic analysis of the data resulted in the creation of three themes, Defining Asexuality, Asexuality in Interactions, and Research and the Researcher. As participants did not agree with the use of one general definition of asexuality, a list of guidelines to aid researchers in the creation of definitions of asexuality to use in research is proposed. The guidelines were revised based on the participants’ feedback.
