Abstract
While much is known about the factors that contribute to the generation of novel and potentially useful ideas (i.e., creativity), much is still unknown about their subsequent journey towards implementation (i.e., innovation). Hence, the current study examined the process of idea elaboration, in which a preliminary idea (e.g., as captured during a brainstorm) is elaborated into a more concrete proposal (e.g., as pitched to decision-makers). Specifically, we reviewed evidence of a general bias against originality in the reception of ideas, analyzed this phenomenon terms of a paradoxical tension between originality and usefulness, and conducted a quasi-experimental study testing the influence of paradox mindset on people’s engagements with this tension during idea elaboration. A moderated mediation analysis of the hypothesized conditional indirect effects of idea originality (IV) on elaboration (DV) through tension (M), moderated by paradox mindset (W), revealed that the originality of the preliminary idea had no effect on idea elaboration, and found no evidence of mediation or moderation. However, our findings do confirm an important role for paradox mindset in idea elaboration. We discuss theoretical and practical implications.
