Abstract

Background: The relationship between Islamic religiosity and posttraumatic stress is largely unexplored. Mixed findings exist regarding the effect of religiosity on psychopathology. This study aimed to explore the effect of Islamic religiosity on posttraumatic stress and the mediating roles of rumination and experiential avoidance in that relationship. Method: A sample of 84 Muslim adults (67% female, Mage = 33.2, SDage = 11.3, age range 18-61) completed an online survey assessing different concepts within Islamic religiosity (including Islamic Doctrinal beliefs, Islamic meaning-making, and religious coping), rumination, experiential avoidance, and posttraumatic stress. Participants were mainly recruited from Egypt, Germany, and the Netherlands. Results: While no significant direct relationship was found between Islamic religiosity and posttraumatic stress, Islamic religiosity was significantly related to rumination and experiential avoidance, which were, in turn, related positively to posttraumatic stress. Specifically, Islamic meaning-making and positive religious coping related negatively to rumination and experiential avoidance, whereas negative religious coping related positively to these factors. Conclusion: These findings suggest a mediating role of rumination and experiential avoidance in the relationship between Islamic religiosity and posttraumatic stress. Studies with larger sample sizes should further investigate this relationship and other mediating variables. Keywords: Islamic religiosity, religious coping, posttraumatic stress, rumination, experiential avoidance
