Abstract

It has been proposed that different facets of mindfulness are linked to different cognitive functions. This study investigated cross-sectional associations between trait mindfulness, its facets, and cognition among older adults using multiple regression analyses. A total of 240 Dutch adults aged between 60 and 78 years completed the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire – Short Version (FFMQ–SF) and various measures of cognition, including the Semantic Fluency task for verbal fluency, the 15-Word Verbal Learning Test for memory, the Digit Symbol Substitution Test for processing speed, and the WAIS Digit Span Backwards for working memory. Results indicate positive associations between trait mindfulness and cognition and, more specifically, between the Describing facet of mindfulness and verbal fluency, supporting the multifaceted conceptualization of trait mindfulness with differential links to cognitive functions. Given the exploratory nature of the current study and the poor reliability of the FFMQ–SF subscales, conclusions are tentative and require replication.
