Abstract

This study investigates the impact of serious versus humorous responses to sexism on perceptions of female confronters and male perpetrators. We hypothesised that humour would enhance perceptions of warmth, likeability, and prototypicality of the female confronter. In an experimental design, participants (N = 105) engaged in chatroom interactions where a woman confronted a sexist remark either seriously or humorously. The findings indicated that there were no significant differences in perceptions of warmth, likeability, or perceived prototypicality of the female confronter who confronted either seriously or humorously. In the serious confrontation approach, however, the female confronter was perceived as higher in competence. The male perpetrator was perceived as warmer and more likeable when the woman humorously confronted his statement. Furthermore, group cohesion was enhanced when a humorous confrontational approach was employed. These findings suggest that while humor as a strategy to confront sexism can enhance group cohesion, the serious confrontation approach resulted in the female confronter being perceived as higher in competence. Keywords: sexism, female confronters, humour versus seriousness, confrontation strategies
