Abstract

The identity integration of individuals with conflicting identities is closely related to their well-being, research shows that a higher degree of identity integration leads to a higher well-being. LGBTQ+ Muslims face a lot of negative consequences in their daily lives because of their conflicting identities. Whereas, a positive humor style has been shown to have many health benefits. This article explores the influence of positive humor on the identity integration and well-being of LGBTQ+ Muslims. In this empirical study we investigate the relationship between a self-enhancing humor style, subjective well-being and identity integration. We proposed that a self-enhancing humor style would increase identity integration and lead to a higher well-being and that self-enhancing humor mediates the intervention effects. We conducted a humor intervention where we manipulated the use of self-enhancing humor while dealing with an imaginary stressful situation related to LGBTQ+ and Muslim identities. No intervention effect was found but the results of the study shows that identity integration was positively correlated with positive affect and positive humor style was positively correlated with life satisfaction. Furthermore, we found a mediation effect of positive humor on life satisfaction. We conclude that identity integration and positive humor style are related to well-being. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
