Abstract

Although the concept of well-being has been studied relatively well within psychology there is a lack of research regarding well-being within academia. This study attempts to clarify the current conceptualization of academic well-being as well as add to the current literature. The research is based on the Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000) and applies the positive psychology approach. Semi-structured interviews of 12 participants were held to give us a deeper insight into student’s opinions on how well-being in the university setting could be better understood and improved. The main findings are in line with current literature and show that the need for relatedness is imperative when considering students’ well-being within academia. A general balance of physical and mental well-being has also been shown to be of great importance. The study offers a deeper insight into student well-being and acts as a basis for further research.
