Abstract

This research examines the concept of psychological momentum (PM) in handball. PM is defined as the perception of movement toward a desired outcome, which is positive PM, and the perception of movement away from this outcome, which is negative PM. The current research provides the first insights into the development of team PM in a real-life, competitive environment. Four handball games from two teams were filmed, and the matches were watched back to identify potential periods with positive and negative PM. The players filled in a questionnaire about their perceptions of PM during every minute of the identified periods to gain more information about the development of PM and the variance between players. Also, the heart rate and covered distance were tracked during the games to gain insight into the development of both variables and their variances during PM. This was analyzed using curve estimations and repeated measures analysis to look at patterns in the development. The most important results were that across teams, the results showed an explosive development of positive PM and a more gradual development of negative PM. During this development, the variance did not change significantly over time, patterns in the covered distance were inconsistent with earlier literature, and patterns in heart rate seemed to align with the patterns of the cognitive PM measures. More research in real-life team PM is necessary to validate these results and to examine whether more team-based variables must be used to measure perceived team PM. Keywords: Team dynamics, PM variance, Dynamic state tracker, Heart rate, Covered distance
