Abstract

Although it is generally assumed that emotion enhances episodic memory, the results of previous studies are mixed. According to some studies, positive emotion might enhance association-memory (memory for the relations between elements) and promote gist-based compared to detailed processing. Research also shows that extraversion is positively associated with how often, how strongly, and how long individuals experience positive emotions. In the current study, we investigated whether positive emotion indeed leads to enhanced episodic association-memory, and a diminished memory for object details, and whether extraversion facilitates these effects. We conducted a within-participants experiment (N = 87), where we manipulated emotion (positive versus neutral) within events. Results showed that our social conditioning manipulation was unsuccessful in inducing emotion. Furthermore, no effects of positive emotion on episodic memory accuracy and the moderating role of extraversion were found. We conclude ineffective social conditioning and emotion manipulation, and an insufficient sample size.
