Abstract
The achievement goal approach states that individuals want to achieve competence or avoid feeling incompetent according to different standards they may use (task versus self versus other). In the present study, we investigated the differences in valence and standard of achievement goals between goalkeepers (GKs) and forwards (FWs). We argue and demonstrate that the main objective of GKs is to avoid failure and to focus on the task, while for FWs it is to approach success and to focus on other-based goals. An online questionnaire was used, which was filled out by Dutch amateur GKs (N = 20) and FWs (N = 21). The findings showed that GKs endorse more often avoidance goals than approach goals. Relative to FWs, they rely more often on avoidance goals, but not less often on approach goals. GKs also tended to rely more on task-based goals, while FWs used other-based goals most often. Limitations and theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
