Abstract

Article 12 of the children’s rights convention describe that children have the right to participate in choices that concern them. Within the child protection agency, children are dependent of their youth protection worker to facilitate them in meaningful participation. Studies show children often don’t get facilitated to express their views. Even though there is knowledge about meaningful participation in practice more knowledge is required to get a better insight in the experiences of protection workers, to help them better facilitate meaningful participation for children in harmful situations. The aim of this study is to get a better insight in the experiences of youth protection workers working at ‘Jeugdbescherming Gelderland’ in working with meaningful participation in the decision making process. To answer this question this study used a qualitative research method with semi structured interviews with 17 (n=17) protection workers. The interviews are analyzed using the reflexive thematic analysis to explore patterns across the dataset to reflect on these patterns and generate themes. The analyses shows that all the participants express the importance of involving children, although all the protection workers have a different definition of child participation and because of this don’t fully use the entire continuum of meaningful participation. The participants describe how they involve children in the protection process and describe different personal factors like their experience knowledge and contextual factors which have influence on how they facilitate meaningful participation. These experiences can help improve the protection process, in line with article 12 of the children’s rights convention
