Abstract
Although domestic violence is highly prevalent and can have severe consequences, many women stay in abusive relationships. The perceived barriers to leaving domestic violence were examined in this systematic review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). In this review, 12 studies on perceived barriers for women were identified. Results included both personal and societal elements, indicating a complex relationship of factors that cannot be regarded independently. Barriers to leaving that women in abusive relationships encountered could be roughly categorized as practical issues, psychological issues, social issues, and issues resulting from institutional policies and practices. These categories overlapped to some extent. Although any study is limited, especially when it comes to sensitive matters like abuse, this review may help to highlight potential difficulties that women may face. Interventions to help people leave abusive relationships should take into account the variety of factors mentioned and be tailored to the individual.
