Abstract

Abstract The rise of algorithmic managers is transforming workplace dynamics, raising questions about their impact on employees’ perceptions of organizational justice. This study explores how nonfulfilled promises of algorithmic managers (transactional or relational) influence perceptions of distributive, procedural, and interactional justice, and examines the moderating role of anthropomorphism of algorithmic manager. This study used a 2 ( type of nonfulfilled promises: transactional vs. relational) x 2 (low vs. high anthropomorphism of algorithmic manager) experimental design with 258 participants, predominantly from the UK. Results showed that no main effects of nonfulfilled promise type on organizational justice was found. However, results showed that low anthropomorphic algorithmic managers were seen as less distributively just when transactional as compared to relational promises were nonfulfilled. Additionally anthropomorphism did not moderate procedural or interactional justice. These findings highlight the importance of anthropomorphic design for algorithms in shaping justice perceptions in organizations and suggest that the nonfulfillment of promises do not necessarily result in a significantly influenced perception of organizational justice. Future research should investigate possible mediating variables in these relationships. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Keywords: algorithmic manager, anthropomorphism, non-fulfillment of transactional vs. relational promises, organizational justice.
